Introduction

             The “An integrated approach for the reconstruction of sediment contaminant history” (SEDICON) research project will develop a novel sedimentological approach to overcome the substantial knowledge gap in the historic pollution impacts on aquatic environments and to achieve the goals of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. The results of this research project will provide the first data of the historic sediment accumulation rates and associated anthropogenic contaminants in protected aquatic environments from SE Romania - Snagov Lake and Balta Mică a Brăilei Natural Park. It will integrate chronological (Pb-210 dating method and Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating), geochemical (heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and total hydrocarbons, total organic carbon) and lithological (grain size distribution) data for the identification and quantification of specific pollution episodes in sediment columns, correlated with changes in catchment hydrological processes. It is believed that the information obtained through this research will be of value in supporting the sustainable management of sediment resources and the efficient management of historically contaminated sites.
